MTD spreadsheet templates
free to download.
Pick the one that matches your income. Both work in Excel and Google Sheets, take about five minutes to set up, and cost nothing to download.
Free to download, no email address required, no account needed until you're ready to submit.
Which describes your income?
HMRC treats self-employment and property as separate businesses with separate quarterly updates, so the templates are built differently. Pick the one that fits.
Sole trader MTD template
For anyone self-employed. Income, expenses and a built-in Overview sheet that totals everything by quarter, ready to send to HMRC.
Landlord MTD template
For UK property income. Rent, expenses, mortgage interest and carried-forward finance costs, with quarterly totals built in.
Got both types of income? Download both. HMRC gives each income type its own Business ID and asks for separate quarterly updates, so they cannot be combined into one spreadsheet. Your first income source is £20 a year and each additional one is £10.
suiteSheets provides two free Making Tax Digital spreadsheet templates: one for sole traders and self-employed income, one for landlords and UK property income. Both are standard .xlsx files compatible with Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets, and both are free to download with no email address or account required.
Each template includes a built-in Overview sheet that totals income and expenses by quarter, ready for submission through the suiteSheets platform. Users who already keep their own spreadsheet can instead download just the Overview sheet and add it to their existing records.
HMRC treats self-employment and property as separate businesses for Making Tax Digital, each requiring its own quarterly updates, so a person with both types of income needs both templates. Submission through suiteSheets costs £20 per tax year for the first income source, covering all four quarterly updates, and £10 per year for each additional income source.
